They like slick branches AND heavy barked branches to climb on, a variety, not just one. They like a small light source low in the tank, a very low wattage bulb. They are EXTREMELY curious and want to investigate things, so, to keep them psychologically happy, put a variety of new things in the tank once a week and/or rotate them through the weeks. A clean toilet paper roll, a piece of heavy grade sandpaper to slither across, gerbil tunnels and habitats, a shallow dish with fresh water for bathing (be sure to let any water that your snake drinks or bathes in is left open to the air at least 24 hours so that nasty chlorine molecules float out of it.) They like really clean environments, so, A fresh, totally cleaned out and dry plastic milk jug once a week with shredded up cotton cloth inside delights them. The opening of the milk jug may need to be enlarged a little depending upon the size of your snake. Something they can or may not like, it depends on the individual, is a glass mirror, just a small one in a corner the tank flat on the floor to slither over. Sometimes, sad or bored or neglected snakes can be over stimulated or frightened by the mirror, but, when properly nurtured and regularly stimulated, most snakes get a kick out of the mirror. Domesticated snakes are very social with other species. If you have small caged pet birds, too, be sure to put the snake tank close up next to the bird cage so that they can become bonded. They will, especially with parakeets. Same with a fish tank. Be sure to have the proper plants and gravel/sand, depending upon the kind of snake, and if possible, place houseplants around the exterior of the tank, too, especially a small tree that dangles over the tank a bit. At Walmart, they have those tacky water serenity sounds fountains for under $20. I wouldn't put one in the tank, but, rather, place it nearby so that the snake benfits from the humidity AND it doesn't look too bad in a room. Or, simply get a small inexpensive humidifier. The amount of humidity depends on the kind of snake. Keep really loud noises and music down because, although they can't hear like we do, they feel the air pressure against their scales. Too much "hum" can make them nervous and sicken. Be sure to handle it a lot and baby talk it. Again, they can't hear but they sure know when someone loves them or not. A well loved snake blossums into a really amazing, lovely, sweet creature.

Go to a landscaping stone supply store (cheaper than the pet store) and get small pieces of flat rock to build a cave and give you snake something to rub against when it needs to shed. Also branches to climb on and a clay dish for water. You could add a couple of fake plants for decorative effect if you would like...but stick to fake plants, live plants might have chemicals in the soil that could hurt the snake. Use heat tape or an "under the tank" heater, heat rocks are no good because the snake will spend all it's time curled up on it and could end up getting burned by it. They also need a heat lamp in one corner because they need a slightly higher temperature to help them digest their food.

Well, I've seen so many different ideas. You could put a long twirly stick inside. And some small pebbles. Makes great movement feeling in the tummy of the snake.
