This has to be the strangest dream I've ever had (and I've had some pretty weird dreams before!).
The strangest thing about it was that I wasn't myself in the dream. I dreamt that I was a young woman, it was late at night and I was at a 24-hour garage buying some food. There was a group of young guys hanging around and they started wolf whistling and making suggestive remarks, then they started following me home and remember feeling very scared and intimidated and I was worried they were going to rape me. I can't remember much else about the dream except that I got so worried that I had to call a taxi because I didn't want to walk home alone.
Normally I don't give my dreams too much thought, but this one really spooked me. I've never had a dream where I was someone else, and the fact that I was a woman in the dream is very strange. Does anyone know what this might mean?

It means that at night when your brain had nothing to do it was busy re-arranging thoughts and memories - a bit like de-fragging your hard drive on your pc. Some of those thoughts and memories and randomness pass through your visual cortex causing you to dream - it means absolutely nothing.

Noticed that this woman in your dream could mean you have identify crisis. However, it could mean something else.
There are few situation that you would dream of someone else other than you.
1. symbol- the woman is a symbol of how you see things in reality and you are playing back in your dream world. You probably want to experience how it feels to be treated badly or understand how women feel.
2.Helpless conscience - You feel helpless in some way, dreaming of being a woman may give you a clue subconsciously.
3.Media effect - Some show or movie have alternate role playing and perhaps that lurks into your mind and you want to be part of the movie

I don't think that the fact that you were a woman in this dream is as relevant as the situation you found yourself in. Perhaps this stems from some sort of pressure you are experiencing that would make you feel extremely vulnerable which is maybe something you aren't used to.
Perhaps this manifested itself into what many people think of as the one of the most heinous of crimes were the victim didn't stand a chance. A helpless woman being raped by a gang of men. Perhaps being the type of man who's blood boils at the very thought of this happening to someone else, your conscious has put you in this situation in your dream.
I could be wrong, but to me this seems stress related.

I wouldn't read too much into the symbols of the dream because they mean very little, they are created to work through an emotional process which is troubling but which you are not getting time or allowing time to work on or work through or resolve. It sounds like something is really worrying you and itimidating you and you keep avoiding dealing with it (which is what the Taxi is about).
It was meant to disturb you because your subconscious mind is giving your conscious mind (the part that is ignoring dealling with the issue) a jolt.
Are you not getting on with someone, being bullied, being picked on? Maybe you have someone in your life you want to say goodbye to and you know it will hurt them for you to do so. It must be something like this because we all classicly avoid dealing with such problems because they usually involve dealing with some pain.

In a mass generalisation - men are not supposed to feel vulnerable or insecure and sometimes that is instilled on our subconscious so much that if those feelings are present for whatever reason it can manifest itself as it has in your dreams - in a more 'acceptable' form - as a woman.
Are you thinking of going into a relationship or in a relationship and you are feeling worried about it somehow? Sometimes our inner fears can manifest themselves in dreams and we can get spooked by them - as you have been. Maybe you are worried about feeling 'adequate' in the relationship?
I would try not to worry too much about it although sometimes vivid dreams stay in our minds for a while which makes it very difficult to not worry about.

Gender
Dreams of changing gender (for example, a girl dreams she is a boy) are very common. These other "selves" simply represent feelings or thoughts that come from a side of your personality that you regard as being "male" (or in a boy's case, female). There in many characteristics that we associate with a particular gender, such as aggression being male. It is normal and natural for this to be played out in your dream as you becoming the opposite gender. It helps you to explore or act out feelings, or burn off negative thoughts, that you would otherwise repress.
Worry
If you dream about worrying, it may be a reflection of real worries you have in your waking life. You may have unexpressed emotions, thoughts and angers that are triggering your dream.

Could be a past life memory surfacing in your dreams. Or maybe you are feeling vulnerable in some way in your life at the moment and you feel isolated and at risk in some way? I can empathise - I had the mother of all bad dreams last week and its still haunting me now. Write it down and once you're not as spooked you might be able to analyse it subjectively yourself. xx

Empathy dreams are so cool! I love them because they give me an understanding of where people are coming from even if a particular experience hasn't been MY experience (much like you being a woman).
It isn't a bad omen or anything, but keep an eye open for people that are fearful. You have insight into their feeling and your empathy will come across in communications.
Live well

Do not be alarmed. This is not something to be upset about. It is interesting that you were given the opportunity to experience what it is like to be a woman. Perhaps, there is an actual woman in your life or it could just simply be that you are trying to understand what it means to be cornered, or in other words, what it is like to "prey".
For a man, I can see how this could be seen as upsetting, but don't be. Do you have another area of your life in which you don't have a choice about something?

The dream may just be your fear of any type of scary situation. Often men are told that they should not be afraid or fear anything, but that's just not realistic. Just because you were a woman does not mean you think of yourself as a woman or want to be one, but in your mind women are more vulnerable than men, so you had to, in some sense, reduce yourself to this acceptable level of vulnerability, in order to access this fear that you think you cannot have.
