I am begging my parents to get me a Chevy Cobalt SS (not SS Supercharged) because that is the best ca eva. However, Chevy recomends that you use premium gas for the SS engine. I was wondering, what would happen if you dont use premium gas would that somehow mess up the engine somehow or what?

regular gas works just fine.

For everyone that gave me a thumbs down......

Configuration: 2.4L
Displacement: 2.384 cc
Bore x Stroke: 88mm x 98 mm
Valvetrain: Dual overhead camshafts, 4 valves per cylinder
Valve Lifters: Hydraulic roller finger follower
Compression Ratio: 10.6:1
Firing Order: 1-3-4-2
Fuel System: Sequential port fuel injection

>>>>>RECOMMENDED FUEL: Unleaded regular<<<<<

Peak Horsepower: 177 hp (132 kW)
Peak Torque: 166 lb-ft (223 Nm)

Just shows how people on Yahoo don't always know what they are talking about!

These are the specs from GENERAL MOTORS!!!

Yes it would mess up your engine because regular 87 octane gas will cause detonation. Detonation happens because 87 octane is actually more flamable and it will ignite before your piston reaches top-dead center causing your engine to get really hot. And I found that out the hard way. But make sure you check the manual first because it might not require 93 octane gasoline. By the way the non supercharged version SS is an awsome choice. I thought about one for my self.

And a neon is not faster than the car you like. And the SS version was the fastest (0-60 in 5.9 sec.)out of the 06 Si, Golf GTI, and, Subaru WRX

I believe you only have to use premium gas in the SS supercharged, not the regular SS, if you don't use premium in the supercharged version it would not run as good as the motor would be detonating and the knock sensor would automatically retard the timing on the engine as not to hurt the engine and it just wouldn't let it run to it's full potential.
build cobalts for a living.

My GTO says 'Premium Recomended', not 'Required'. I was concerned about this as well, until I read the owners manual which told me it was OK to run regular, I just would get a bit less performance out of her.

To correct some of the other hogwash answers before me, Premium fuel burns slower than regular and is actually more likely to cause carbon buildup. It does typically contain more detergent than regular, but using regular won't 'gum up' your engine.

It could. It probably won't, as most modern engines are supposed to sense if detonation is happening and prevent it, but it would degrade performance (possibly economy, as well) and there could still be damage. (For example, if the detonation is too small, it might not set off the sensor, but it could still be causing damage.)

Basically, they recommend premium for a reason. Use what the manual says to use, or as close to it as you can get.

Higher octane gas has more octane, the chemical that makes gasoline highly combustible. Using higher octane gasoline on an engine that only needs regular gasoline will not increase performance (even if your butt dyno says it does) and might even hurt gas-mileage. Putting lower octane gas in premium only engines will make high performance less efficient in terms of burning off the extra carbon (the most prevalent element n octane). Carbon buildups can occur and chunks of unburt carbon will clog up your engine. If these chunks get too thick they could break off randomly and explode in different parts of your engine or just get stuck where they're not supposed to be. Cleaning that stuff out or repairing an engine can get quite expensive.

sounds like your spoiled (free car) maybe if you had to pay for it yourself you would use the recommended fuel.
your car's filler neck would be small anyways,,as regular gas the nossil is bigger than premium.

if an engine calls for it and its not used, the engine will get gummed up and sooner or later cause problems.

keep car shopping.....the cobalt is not the best car ever....actually it is one of the worst cars on the market. even a dodge neon will rank higher in quality, speed, handling, cost, etc.

save yourself a ton of headaches and service department trips....don't buy it.

You'll burn up your valves. And Colbalts are CRAP!!!! Neons suck too. Look into Toyota, Mazda or Subaru
