I use them until the baby starts being able to wiggle out of "position" in the crib on it's own. As long as the baby stays where I put them, I leave the bumpers in to block drafts and give a cozier feel. They come off as soon as baby can wiggle enough to get it's face near the bumpers.

I use them when the crib is in bassinet form... once the baby is old enough to move around on his own, I'll lower the crib into it's regular position and take the bumper pads off. I did this with my first son and am expecting any day now!

I didn't want to use any because of the SIDS risk, but I had a VERY active baby, who was getting her legs stuck outside of the crib and not being able to get them back in! Frustrating for both of us! So, I bought the mesh bumpers. Safe for baby (which is great, because my baby LOVES to push herself up against the sides of the crib sometimes), but they keep her little legs contained. I put the link to the ones I bought below, if you want to check them out (they do come in other colors).

I personally would perfer bumper pads for the fact that you can have a child who is very active in the middle of the night. They may turn and squirm alot and because of that you may want to be cautious because they can bump their head or other body parts in the middle of the nights.
You should have no worries as long as they are tied on tight and properly, also be sure that there aren't any excess items in the crib like toys and extra blankets.

The problem I have with bumper pads is that my daughter pulled the pad off of where its stiched to the tie. So it doesnt stay around the edge of the crib. If you want them for functionality rather than looks, I would get a mesh one that is flush against the side, and are breathable.

Yes we used them. I had a baby die of SIDS and what you are talking about is not SIDS it is suffocation, they are not the same thing. If a baby stops breathing because of an obstruction of some sort that is not SIDS. SIDS is when they suddenly stop breathing for no apparent reason. My daughter was just laying on her back beside my husband as he sat on the couch watching TV. If you are worried about suffocation that is one thing but a bumper pad does not have anything to do with SIDS.

I only have one child and I used the bumper pads after we realized his poor head was smashed up against the bars. There are foam forms you can get at the baby store that keep them in the center on there back. kind of like what is on the changing table. But I admit I was scared to death of giving him a blanket until after he was a year old...

yes, we use the bumper pads..as long as the baby cannot get in between the crib and pads it should be okay. also make sure the strings are kept out of babies reach.

i used them but i made sure that babys face was not smashed into the bumper, and i made sure they were tied tight and tuck the bumper part way down between the mattress so its snug. lay your child on his side or back to prevent sids, remove blankets pillows and stuffed animals. dress them warm enough that they dont need a blanket. to prevent flat spot on back of the head change babies position so hes not laying on the same spot of his head. and i used to massage my childs head in a circular motion daily. in my mind i thought it would help. it couldnt hurt they loved it.
