The NBA doesn't really use a wild-card system. They use a seeding system to place the teams for the playoffs. Eight teams from each conference get a trip to the playoffs. These eight teams are seeded, or positioned, 1-8 based on regular season records. So really, every team is fighting it out all season to be one of those top 8 in their conference. Once they get in, it's a best-of series that determines who advances to the next round.

Don't listen to that guy. There are 4 divisions in each conference. 8 teams go from each conference. the first 4 spots in each conference are taken by the division leaders and the other 4 spots in each conference are taken by the next 4 teams with the best overall records in their respective conferences.
