stowage is when you put something in a particular place that usually has a specific function and you only use it periodically---storage,is just simply putting stuff somewhere not usually to be usednow and then-just stored for possible use later on rather than throwing it out

Stowage is packing things - storage is keeping things in one place/condition.
Any cargo or freight is 'stowed' - but may not be stored for any length of time..
Go overseas and leave your household effects in storage - they'll be 'stowed' as well as 'stored'. Stowed into a container, stored till you return.
Go overseas and have your household effects sent out to you, they'll be 'stowed' for the journey, but unpacked (= not stored) after they arrive.
