What is the orange stuff in my ant farm??

I bought my son an ant farm that has harvester ants. There is some kind of orange stuff off to the side in the farm. Just curious what it is.

The only thing I can come up with is that he was trying to feed the ants pieces of cheese and peanut butter crackers...
