The washing machine (GE Spacemaker) won't drain and pressing the start button just makes a buzzing noise. The machine is old and I need to know if fixing it will be cheap or should I replace the whole thing. Can a local guy diagnose the problem?

Also -- how do I drain the nasty water inside the machine? I can't access the hoses in the back -- they are inaccessible.

Try a Mr. Appliance in your area if you have one. They do great work and are really fast, 24 hour service and no extra charge for overtime!

Yes, a local repairman should be able to fix the problem. But if the machine is really old, it might not be worth fixing. If there's water in the tub of the machine just bail it out with a cup. When the water gets low enough, wipe the rest with a rag. I'd guess it's time to replace it though.

You may be better off getting it replaced. You might pay a little bit more for a new one compared to what you are going to pay for a service call and parts.

You can dip the water out or siphon it out with a garden hose.

If your washer is under warranty, having someone from an outside repair company work on it might invalidate your warranty, so you might want to look into that aspect. If it isn't under warranty, you can probably have any appliance repair person fix it.
