I have one and I can listen to many stations in the Middle East.

I have bad news. He wont be able to pick up any arabic speaking Egyptian stations, simply because they are not boradcast on satellite. The local radio stations are AM based, with a few more on the FM, but none on satellite. The only stations that boradcast via satellite are Nile & Nogoom FM. I know for a fact that Nile FM broadcasts via satellite and the web and there are people who actually listen to it from everywhere. I am not sure though about Nogoom FM.

There is no point really in buying one of those mega radios

Try to listen to the radio online instead of picking up actual AM/FM frequencies. There are a lot of stations that broadcast online 24/7 now, starting with the BBC, Al Jazeera, etc...
