I don't think the word is... broken hearted, but perhaps... open minded. My past relationships have always taught me something about myself that I need to work on. I've learned from my mistakes and I know what I want or don't want. I won't ever do the same thing twice again that's for sure.
I do think that maybe my heart has toughened up each time to, so it takes me longer to truly trust and give my all into a relationship.
The relationship I'm in now has been really healthy for the both of us. We are learning how to love each other despite the realities of relationships. We have been real honest with each other about how we feel and how hard it is to warm up and have given each other the space needed to build that trust. We have both accepted the ex's as possibly being a part of each of our lives.
He moved from Boston to be with me and the truth is he might very well decide to go back. And I can't hold him from that. He has family back there and he might need to travel often to see them.
I guess what I'm getting at is as long as you are upfront and honest about your situation and what you want out of a relationship, then you absolutely have the chance of having perhaps even a more meaningful relationship then you ever have in your whole life.
Good Luck to you.

I felt that way at the time but I have been with a man that I love more than I ever loved the other guy for 12 years married and 14 years dating

Yes, but I am now married to a man who knew what I had been through, and he thinks I'm worth it. When I was in the middle of the heart break, I thought there was no hope and I would never trust anyone ever again. It will always be a part of you, but does not have to define you.

don't know about how deeply scarred i will be. i just got dumped by bf three weeks ago and i swear that i will never abandon myself for anyone again. i learned that you are your own best friend and you do anything to keep your relationship with you. because you are the only person that can help you in times of great desperation and need. so i will never abandon myself ever again.

Very damaged, but mending. It takes time and honesty. I'm not perfect, but neither is anyone else.
