If she loves animals, is it ok to surprise them before telling them..?
Like giving a box with a big bow on it, with the puppy inside.

Three years ago my hubby went and got me a basset hound for valentines day and he put her in the bed with me. I was so happy
and surprised. I love her

I think that's really cute, but you should consider several things before surprising her. Does she have time to walk it and devote time to take care of it? Just because she loves animals doesn't mean she has the time for them. A dog is at least a 10 year committment, make sure she will be able to dedicate time to properly care for the puppy before surprising her with it. If she does have the time, then I definitely think it's a very cute surprise. I happen to love German Shepards!

Think long term, my friend. What if she can't keep it, will you be able to? A puppy says "This is the next level." So be aware that your girlfriend may be thinking this when she sees a puppy. You will probably thinking " Oh yeah, I'll get some tonight..." But if you just want action, give her chocolates or flowers. Or something heartfelt, like poetry or a dinner followed by a long walk. You can get very creative and paint her....with chocolate. ;) Just be aware of the signals your gift sends.

Animals are not gifts. This is one of the leading causes of pets being dropped at shelters, pounds and rescues (the latter of which is better, but still sucks) and possibly being euthanized. If you know she wants and can handle one, surprise her and take her to a rescue or shelter and say pick one. Dogs are a commitment. You need to train a dog, keep it exercised, buy good food, toys to keep their mind working so they don't get bored, get proper veterinary care (expensive!) the list goes on! But, please, anyone who reads this, never give a dog as a gift and/or surprise. A dog is not a possession. My dog (pictured) was a Christmas present to a family who "couldn't handle" her & abused & abandoned her. She came to me a terrified, tiny, sad, 3 pound mess. She's happy and healthy today, but no dog deserves that. Get a dog that needs a home already and is waiting instead of lining the pockets of breeders who are adding to the incredible number of dogs euthanized every day in America.

Please never give animals as gifts. Give her a stuffed toy dog and ask her if she wants you to replace it with the puppy of her choice. This may not be the right time for a new pet. Or she may not really want a big or small dog.
Not fair to the animal to be adopted by the wrong family.

Yes, that is a very sweet, cute, and adorable gift. But try to give her a smaller dog like a Beagle or Daschund and make sure she is allowed to have dogs in her apartment or home. Plus make sure that she has time on her hands to trained and watch the dog on a regular basis. Think long term because having a puppy is a huge commitment and make sure she really wants a dog.

Try to give her a pet goldfish with flowers and chocolate, it is just as sweet and adorable without the hassle of having a puppy.

Only is you are SURE your girlfriend is ready for the commitment of a dog for the next 20 years. That means she will have to be able to afford to care for it (food and vet bills), have the time to care for it, and have housing where she can have a dog (most apartments and rental places will not let you have large dogs).

Getting someone a pet for a gift it highly unadvisable unless you are married or otherwise involved such that you will be able to ensure that the animal is cared for its entire life.

I work in rescue and we have so many dogs abandoned every day because their families could no longer care for them. check out www.petfinder.com and read some of the stories of the poor family dogs who are now locked in some strange place hoping to make it out with their lives...

Pets are living things and should not be given as gifts unless specifically asked for; since they require a great deal of commitment and care. Give her a stuffed animal instead with a card that asks if she'd be interested in the real thing!

Only if she has time for a puppy right now! As I am sure you know, puppies are a lot of work!... If she has talked about wanting one, and seriously considered having one, then I think it would be okay! ... If not, you might not want to surprise her with such a big responsibility!

Noo! Never give a pet with out your loved ones permission. IT might has seemed as a cute idea and it is but a puppy comes with major responsibility, such as food, vet, grooming, training etc. You should ask her or bring up the idea to see what she says.

It's a sweet idea BUT..... the dog could live to be up to 16 years old! What if she got bored of it before then, or once it grew out of being a puppy?

I personally am a little wary, but if you really think it'll make her happy and one - or both, ideally - of you are prepared to look after it as long as it lives.
