This is one that has befuddled many people, but let me reflect my own experience.
When I wear a beard, I always get comments asking me if I have lost weight. Usually the answer is no.
When I shave it off, I get asked if I have lost weight. Usually the answer is no.
It all has to do with changing appearances. If you wear a beard it changes the perception of the jawline and can make it look skinnier to some people and larger to others. Some men, wear beards that give them a chin that they might not otherwise have. You see many fat guys with beards, in case you haven't noticed. This would support that beards DO slim people.
The fact is though, that some people view the face in a more holistic way than others and would therefore include the beard as part of the face when they look at it. So these people may view the person as fatter, unlike the former, who cannot see the jawline. So the answer to the question is Yes and No, but all dependent on the viewer.

Actually it can do a pretty darn good job hiding a double chin. My father-in-law shaved his beard off once, which was the first time I'd ever seen him like that, and I couldn't believe how fat his face really was. He grew it back and it looks a lot better.
Now, sometimes beards make people look *older* than they really are.

I agree with Vik and Boof - all I know is I like 'em! Keep it reasonably trimmed if you don't want the bushy (?fat face) look.
