Mistress Anne was basically being asked what is the role of the clergy in the protestant faith (the Puritans.) She believed in antinomianism, which means that there is no need for a regularly-ordained clergy. Anyone, EVEN HERSELF, could receive revelation and guidance from God. She also pointed out the contradiction in the false belief of predestination common at that time in the Puritan faith. She pointed out that IF we are all predestined to either heaven or hell then what is the need for a church on earth at all? Why have ministers?, why have a Bible?, why have churches? If our eternal fate is predetermined then aren't all of these things pointless? That of course smacked the face of the Puritan leaders by whom she was being questioned. As a result she was banned to Rhode Island and from there she moved to Long Island (New York) where she and her children were slaughtered by Indians--much to the delight of John Winthrop (Governor of Massachusetts) who later said that her death was God's retribution on her for her heretical teachings and beliefs.

And there you have it.

Anne Hutchinson Summary

Are you takin an at-home multiple guess test? I see alot of these on the list tonight. Anyway, you can't answer this question the way it is designed. Anne Hutchinson was known for her in-home Bible study discussion groups that met weekly to discuss the validity and essence of the minister's sermon for that week. Since the group did not accept the sermon without this weekly discussion, Mrs. Hutchinson met with some opposition from the powers that be. The movement that came out of this home group later became the unitarians because they did not accept Trinitarian doctrine. As time went on, the Unitarians drifted further and further away from the Bible and some became part of the Transcendental movement of the 1800's.

Basically the Puritans could not tolerate Anne because she dared to teach about God. Women are not supposed to teach about God. That was a man's job.
