Think about how your playing style is. What do you like to do? You will eventually have a "role" in a party. Very basic party system you can either be a damage doer (dps), healer, and a tank.
Once you know what you like to do in game, then you can kind of decide what kind of character you want to be.
I suggest trying multiple things out. Read forums online, and check out talent grids to see what sounds interesting for you. There's pleanty of options to choose from, and it's nice that you can have as many characters as you want so you can try those options out.

If you're not planning to buy the Burning Crusade expansion pack, then you will not be able to do the following:

- Reach level 70 (the non-expansion cap is level 60)
- Go to Outland (the expansion-only level 60+ area)
- Take up the Jewelcrafting profession
- Create a Blood Elf (Horde) or a Draenei (Alliance) character.

There really is no "best" or "worst" race/class combination. Although some races cannot be certain classes. For example: the Tauren can't be rogues. Ever seen an eight-foot tall Minotaur-like thing sneaking around in the shadows? Exactly.

Its basically all down to personal preference. Read up on the classes/races (the manual, the official site, etc.) and decide which one you like the best. I wanted to do a lot of damage in a short amount of time, so I chose a mage. Some people like to keep their party alive and fighting and choose a priest.

If you can't decide on a character class, and you want to be a jack-of-all-trades, then the Druid is for you. Only two races can be Druids - the Night Elves for the Alliance and the Tauren for the Horde - but Druids, depending on how their talent points are spent, can either be healers, deal damage through spells (like mages) and, with their feral forms (and appropriate talent point spending) can do quite good melee damage (like rogues) and/or be a punching bag (or "tank" as they're more commonly known) and stop the enemies from attacking the more vulnerable people in the group (like warriors).

Try avoiding the roleplaying realms unless you're really into it, and if you do go to one, try to not go on Feathermoon. As for character, choose either Human or Gnome on Alliance (because we just have too many night elves) and Tauren/Troll on Horde. For class choose either Warrior, Paladin, Priest, or Mage. All of these classes are in high demand for help in dungeons and stuff. Hope that I could help!

Note: not all classes are availible for all races. just wanted you to know.
