Congratulations!
Well, you might want to tell your mother – if you are scared or embarrassed then write her a note and hand it to her, tell her you have your period, anything you want and if you want to talk to her about it.
Celebrate it, this is a very important time in your life, you are growing up and although you may not be too keen on the idea of periods now as you mature you will hopefully learn to love them. Use this as an opportunity to ask your folks for a treat, like new clothes, a sleep over, or something else you might want to celebrate becoming a woman.
Do not use tampons, they are very bad for vaginal health particularly when you are in your teens or younger. Stick to pads for now, particularly cloth or organic pads, then learn about your different menstrual options like menstrual cups, free-flow, tampons and pads, learn the advantages and disadvantages of each.
Learn about your body, it is very important you know all about it and how to deal with different things like how to avoid period pains and PMS as many girls suffer these things without realising they are totally avoidable – periods are only as good or as bad as you make them.

Any questions, feel free to e-mail me from my profile and ask if you are worried about asking your mom - although best you ask mom or older sister as well as learn on your own it can be confusing and embarrassing at first.

Expect mood swings and cramps and very confused men every month for at least 35 years. lol
Being serious, if you are confused you could talk to your mom or someone that can tell you what to expect, just know that every woman is different and react different to situations, eventually you'll learn to listen to your body and you'll get used to it.
Good luck.
