I deeply respect your choice to stay home and look after the home. Its a tough job. (And no, I'm not one of those guys that thinks all women should stay home. I admire men that stay home for the same reason).
It's nice if the house is clean for company, and that the kids are regularly bathed and dressed in clean clothes.
As far as you looking nice when he gets home...it's heartwarming to come home to that, but don't forget about your needs. It's really ok to be in your sweatpants and t-shirt sometimes too when you just feel like taking the day off.
My wife stays at home, and she lets me know when she's getting tired and decides to take a personal day. I can usually read the hint and I'll cook supper once in awhile when I come home from work.
Works for us. Sounds like you are doing a great job too!

i think it's important to have a clean home, as ppl form opinions of you based on how you live. Also, i like to look "nice" for my hubby - but that doesn't mean a skirt & heels, a nice comfy pair of pj's & one of his shirts will do just fine.....it never hurts a marriage for the woman to look "nice"...i know my hubby doesn't wanna come home from work & see me in the same clothes three days in a row, with my hair looking like a rat nest, & make up from a week ago...& i don't blame him....but everything should be within reason. out of respect i will do anything for my hubby but the same is true for him. I think ideal housewife misses the point of how things have changed since the Donna Reed of the 50's;....the "ideal couple" or "ideal marriage" comes much closer, b/c these days it takes two to make anything work smoothly & those who realize this & do it are having the most fun & enjoying it a lot more than those who haven't been clued in yet.

I'm a housewife and I do all the housework except my husband does laundry here and there. I run all the errands: car maintenance, picking the hub up lunch if he can't leave work, doctor appointments, paying bills, calling people in for work on the home (I handled buying the house with the agents by myself), take care of our daughter 24/7. About once every two or three weeks the hub and my daughter might go run an errand on the weekend and I'll get an hour break or so and once every few months I hang out with my friends at the mall or at one of those parties were they sell you stuff. I workout two hours a day usually when my daughter is sleeping. My husband may have people over for dinner from work so I host them here. Too much to explain, lol. I'll hopefully be working at my daughter's school when she starts next year so my schedule will work with hers and I plan on using that income to pay for my Masters that I'll work on when she is sleeping. I guess we are the Twenty-First Century version of Supermom.
Oh and I'm a military wife as well, otherwise I would be near my family so I could have a vacation with dropping my daughter off at her grandparents. We are thousands of miles away though, so that doesn't happen.

An ideal housewife is one who does it all and is able to stay looking good for her husband and keep the kids clean and clean and cook the food and entertain both the kids and husband and go that extra mile in whatever is required of her.

Ideal?!? Everybody is different, but in my opinion it would be nice to be married to a gal that cleans house, organizes, has a nice body and uses it when i'm depressed =P. OH, taking care of the kids is a really nice thing too.

Well, if she doesn't work.....then to me she could keep the house clean, but then again I would help her. She wouldn't have to dress nicely for me, I would prefer her to be herself. Some home cooked meals would be nice too.....but I would also help her with that.....plus help with the dishes. My ideal housewife would love me without reservation, and be behind me 100%, as I would her.

I don't consider a "housewife" at all. I know of no one who is married to a house.
