If you will be contracting the house with yourself being the GC(General Contractor) it would be best to use subcontractors for labor. These people have their own tools, transportation and most importantly their own insurance (if they don't, don't hire them). You can take your plans to a lumber yard and ask them to perform a materials "takeoff." This will give you a list of everything it takes to build a house. Keep in mind that they will charge for this service by the square foot. However, the cost is normally reimbursed to the customer when he/she starts placing orders for materials. BTW, lumber yards can usually refer you to subs that do good work that they deal with on a regular basis.

After you have the cost of materials nailed down, submit your plans to the different trades and start collecting bids.

You should definitely read some books if you have never done this before. Also, talk to people that have built homes on their own and ask them what they learned and what they would do differently next time.

For reference purposes only, the cost to build a new home in my area is usually around $100-110 a square foot not including land and development. Obviously this cost can increase or decrease depending on finishes.

Best of luck building your new home.

Start by contacting a general contractor in your city for an estimate. Building materials plus labor can vary from city to city. Is this house going to be in the city or far away from the major roads? How far will the suppliers have to travel to reach your place?

We built a house up in the mountains and it cost more because of the equipment that was necessary to bring in the building supplies. Some of the material came from over fifty miles to the home site.

People always think that is it easier to build a house than buying one already made. There are many factors in building a house from scratch. If the wood sit out too long it will get warp and you will have to order more wood.

The rule of thumb to generally estimate cost is this: $175 - $200 per square foot for middle of the road materials. At least $300 - $500 per square foor for higher end materials.

Price will be the same as it is for a 5 man crew.

If I asked you how much a car costs what would you say? How about if I asked how long is a piece of string?

Your question can't be answered intelligently because you didn't give any info that would make that possible.

What state are you building you house in? You might want to ask the architect for some leads. Good luck with your house.
