one website said scientists use a high-resolution sonar bathometer called a Sea Beam but it is a database and you can only get on it if you subscribe

Do not know the answer, but LOVE the question. I shall be watching for the answer too. Could they measure from sea level DOWN and then when they hit the lowest point of the 'land', call that the 'height' of the mountain?
