I am 39 weeks pregnant and I have the worst heartburn ever. I have it so bad that it causes me to throw up and I have bad sharp chest pains. I have tried Tums and some of the other over the counter medication that my doc said I could but nothing is helping. Please what is going on and how can I stop it?

Try eating more slowly and then don't lie down afterward (if you are). Also try to watch the kinds of food you eat so you can get an idea of what may trigger heartburn so you can avoid them or eat them sparingly.

I had horrible heart burn with my first 2 and I ate TUMS by the bottle full and mylanta was recommended this time around. Also if you don't want to do meds then try milk and bread both coat your throat and absorb the acid in your stomach. Plus watch what you eat in a day sometimes certain foods trigger it. but beware I had mine from first trimester thru delivery and it just got worse I hope you have better luck than me. This time (I am 24 weeks) not much heartburn thank god. Oh and the heartburn = lots of hair theory is crap my daughter didnt' have lots of hair and I had the most heartburn with her and my son had a whole head full and I had moderate heartburn with him. Now very little heartburn so we will see what this one has :-) CONGRATS and Good Luck

Oh, honey I feel your pain. All that pressure on your stomach from baby can mean killer heartburn! I was the same way. The Worst for me was at night trying to sleep or right after a meal..OUCH!
I really wish I could offer more advice then this but all the Doc told me was Tums, and milk, nibbling crackers (and other "base" foods like rice and potatoes)and stay away from too much spice, juice or tomatoes(acidy). Also (if night is hard for you too) try sleeping propped up or even in a recliner if you have one.

Not much longer now and it will be a distant memory when you see that tiny face :-) Good Luck!

(and to "heartburn=lots of hair" wives tale...for me was not true at all. Mine's 20 weeks and still nothing but peach fuzz LOL!)

Having major heartburn during pregnancy is normal. I had what felt like a raging fire in my throat and chest for 2 months while pregnant. In the last days of a term pregnancy, your body is trying to tell you that it could be time and trying to expell anything foreign. Another thing is that since the baby has dropped, there is a "bubble" so to say in the area that the baby was in. Your body is adjusting to the sudden drop. Over the counter medications did not work for me. I ended up having to get injections once a week. Another thing that helped alot was almost sitting upright when sleeping. I would lay just enough of me down that my head touched the pillow. Eating wheat bread before going to bed helped also. It was eventually when I gave birth that the heartburn stopped.

I've heard that when you have heart burn like that it means that the baby has a lot of hair. I don't know how this is true, but I know that when my sister had my niece she had a head full of hair and my sister ate tums like candy all of the time!! You could probably try gavisgon if your doctor approves! If not, vitamin D milk may help to settle the heartburn

Did he tell you to try Prilosec OTC? Heartburn's very normal in pregnancy but unfortunately, there's not a lot you can take. Luckily, you're 39 wks, so you're almost done! I hear you, though. I have GERD (basically chronic heartburn) and my pregnancies were tough with it. One thing that helps is to constantly have something on your stomach. It'll keep the acid down.

Some bicarbonate of soda might work, or milk might neutralise the acid..either but probably not both at the same time...! You only have a couple of weeks to go, it will be worth it when you hold that new life in your arms!
Good luck!

Gavescon works better then Tums. If you take it, don't swallow it immediately. Let it build a foam in you mouth. Then swallow it.

Also, the proton pump inhibitors(Prilosec, Protonix, etc.)are effective, but I read on a website that a pregnant person should not take them. So, you should check with your doctor before taking them. They also cause diarrhea. But, for acid reduction, they are very effective.

I had the same thing. What worked for me was keeping saltines next to the bed. I didn't even set up until I had some crakers. And of course TUMS and alot of them. Hope you feel better real soon. Good luck

Keep doing what you are doing.

A good wives tale, a true one is that if you have heart burn a lot during pregnancy, your baby will be born with a lot of hair. So, look out, you baby will have a ton of hair! (on its head)
