sometimes the pressure of living, or the fear of financial or emotional ruin means that suicde is an easy option.

About ten years ago my years of expensive living and stupid generosity caught up with me and I found myself owing $50,000 to credit card companies. I tried to ignore them, until I began to dread the postman arriving or the telephone ringing. I started drinking heavily and disappearing from everyone.

Suddenly, ending my life seemed a much better alternative to the "life" I was living. After drinking a bottle of whiskey, I drove to a bridge with the intention of jumping off. When I got there, I sat for a while and realised that I was simply going to cause untold grief to my family and that my intended course of action was tremendously selfish.

I slept off the booze, drove home the next morning and confessed all to my wife. I am still paying back those loans but am pleased I did not take that final step. But I can fully understand why people do

Some people have a string off bad luck or problems that they see no way out of.

They feel tremendous emotional pain and fear which is so devastating that living itself is painful.

With nowhere to go and noone to turn to, all that is left keeping them alive is you faith and hope.

For some people when these things happen they feel god has abandoned them and both faith and hope are destroyed also.

Then the only way to stop the pain is death.

Here's the deal. Depression alters thought processes. Literally, people's judgement is impaired. So things suck right now, and not only is your judgement impaired but your cognitive processes may also be. You're not in "problem-solving mode". It's one readily apparant "solution" when no others present themselves, and you're too tired to sit and try to think of any.

Honestly, if you've never had the thoughts then it can't really be explained. It would be like a woman explaining to a guy what being pregnant is like.
