The use of staffs in magic relates back to use by Ancient Egyptian
doctors and priest of staffs. A long straight thin but study pole usually with a short L shaped end at the top.
Being helpful to brush through crowds or give assistance in bad terrain they could be used for many purposes. Including the safe manipulation of snakes and scorpions.
The use of medicine was considerably advanced but incorporated the use of Heka,Egyptian magic.
It is now not an integral part of being a mage, but a traditional one denoting your status.
I would suggest you acquire some of Bucklands books. They will be of great help and give you a wealth of information.
In addition I would suggest :Pagan Rites of Passage.and Ancient Ways. All are available through w.w.w.llewellyn.com.As are all of Raymond Bucklands catalogue.
It takes many many years to be successful at incantations . It relies on far more than reciting words. Each word must have the exact intonation to the correct syllable.
It must be done in a certain way and at a certain time as I'm sure you are learning. It takes time and lots of practise.
Remember, always do purification rites before and cleansing after,as you don't want to retain any energies, like air they go stale and turn bad..
The Egyptians put great emphasis on this and had special lakes along side their temples for this very purpose. It was usual for a doctor or priest to bathe 6 times a day!
Follow your path, but make sure each footstep is placed solid and true.

It depends on your tradition. Buckland has a book on Scottish Witta that suggests they use staffs. However, keep in mind that real magick works through natural means, so I'm not sure what a "powerful" spell should truly look like in the first place. After one month, you could have the best tools in the world--you could have Merlin's own tools--and chances are you'd just be on the baby steps of magick.
