It struck me strange the other day that the San Jacinto monument (taller than the Washington monument) was actually built in a pretty desolate area. Aside from Rushmore, are there really any other expensive, impressive monuments that were built in the middle of nowhere?

I think in the situation with the San Jacinto monument, the obvious reason it is built in the middle of nowhere is because it is built on the battle field the monument was made to commemorate. No monument is built in the middle of nowhere with out a reason. For example: the Titanic in the middle of nowhere, the American flag on the moon, the plaque at the top of Everest, or catacombs deep underneath urban centers.

Some other fun ones are the Neolithic stone arrangements throughout Europe. At the time they were built they were likely centralized, but today many of them are in the middle of nowhere.
