Why? Well, to break it to you, girls have a part of guy in them and guys have a part girl in them. Strange, Yes. How...Guys have X and Y Chromosomes and Girls only have X, and thus, X Chromosomes (girl) is what makes a guys nipple. Simple Terms:Guys have X and Y. Girl has X. Nipples comes with X. When babies are formed in the womb, we all have the same stuff going on. Even the sex organs are similar up to a point. When the determination of boy or girl is made boys have nipples. However, the function of lactation is turned off for boys whereas the breast function continues to change for girls.

I think the better question is why do they have mammary glands?
Evolution never got rid of either, just like it never got rid of snakes' hip bones. While you don't need nipples, they aren't doing any harm either. That's about all I can tell you.

the purpose is more of similarity with women and of course sexual pleasure. you can increase pleasure during intercourse by rubbing it or have it lick by your partner. try rubbing it and see how it feels
