I have a 1984, Ford F-150, with only 78,000 miles on it. I have already had it inspected, changed oil, put carb cleaner in it, and have had the carborator cleaned out as it was making it stall and cut off. Well recently, my truck has been cutting off alot, even if i left it on for a long time. It would be moving then just turn off, steering wheel lock up, and all of that and i would have to recrank it and go. Well a few days ago, it got really bad. It caused me to have a wreck today, when i came around a turn with a stop sign only going 40 mph (tops) and it cut off, locked up my wheel and the breaks werent as responsive because it was not cranked up. I went head first into a ditch. There was no damage at all to the truck or me, but i want to know is there anyway at all to cure this problem of it cutting off for good?

I assume your steering locked up due to the loss of power steering........when your engine died.if your saying the ignition killed on your truck.....then have the ignition switch checked...it is possible [since someone messed with your carb.] that the float setting,s are too high.....causing fuel spillover around turn,s &while stoping or under hard acceloration......flooding your engine causing it to die........could be many other thing,s also....but check theese thing,s out first.

Generally there are two simple problems:

1) Vacuum leak at intake manifold causing an over lean condition.
Look and listen around the intake manifold for a small hose that may have come off.

2) EGR valve is getting stuck in the open position and causing the exhaust gasses to enter the intake durring idle.

i'm not sure if a 1984 has a carburetor or if it fairly is gasoline injected. the two way, i might wager it fairly is a gasoline mixture undertaking. sufficient gasoline for it to crank, yet too plenty to maintain it working. After the engine shuts off, pull a spark plug or 2...it is going to be black and moist if that's the subject. If it has a carburetor, you have a caught choke valve which may well be fastened by way of eliminating the air clear out canister (the housing that holds the air clear out and suits on good of the carb) and spraying carb air purifier into the carb to loosen the seen "butterfly" valve. cost $10.00 If it fairly is gasoline injected, you're transforming into a leaking gasoline injector(s) it is pouring too plenty gasoline into the intake manifold which creates the comparable effects as a caught carburetor choke valve. you may attempt pouring carb air purifier into the gasoline tank and se if it clears up after some miles, or replace the defective injectors (cost $a hundred or extra per injector).

we had an '83 ford that did the same thing. We had two gas tanks and it only happened on the rear tank. It ended up being a short in the relay box between the two tanks. Check your entire fuel system...I am sure you will find the solution there.

the most likely problem is the control module on the fender well. most of the time they just burn out. sometimes they act as you have described.

It may be bad gas. When was the last time you put gas in it? I would also change the plugs and plug wires.
