This happens all the time. One of the more common questions is, "What religion are you?" or, "Do you believe in God?" If I say, "Atheist," or, "No," then I get a bunch of thumbs down. Why? That seems silly to me. I don't give people thumbs down if they quote scripture from their holy book of choice. So this question is for those of you that automatically give a thumbs down to atheists. Why are you doing that? Isn't it petty?

There were a lot of responses that said I shouldn't care. I don't care. I'm not losing sleep over the fact that I got a thumbs down on Y!A. I'm just curious why it happens.

It happens because people are usually fearful of others who do not believe the same as they do. I believe in a God, but not a God in the heavens. I believe there is a God within me, within each of us. That doesn't make me an atheist. It simply underscores that I have the right to believe as I choose.
...and look at it this way. this is a question and answer. People ask questions Others answer. No one here is an expert. Everyone has a right to their own opinion. The "thumbs down" button is just a button. If someone doesn't like what you say, they hit that button. It makes them feel good. It's like another way of saying "o yeah, well take that," or "so you don't think like I do?"
"well here's a thumbs down." and so on and so forth.
So don't worry about that "thumbs down." It's just a button.

More likely you get most thumbs down because you're obnoxious in your answers, or not. But don't feel alone, most on here get thumbs down for varying reasons. It's about the only way to show disagreement with answers. This isn't really a true discussion forum.

Everyone gets thumbs down on their answers because there will always be people who disagree with us. I don't let it bother me one iota if I get a lot of thumbs down on a certain response. We have a right to voice our opinions, and not everyone wants to hear it but that's just the way it goes.

Look how many thousands of folks hang out at YA. Have you ever gotten even 100 thumbs down? Is it REALLY worth getting hung up on a few people who give you a thumbs down... especially when you don't even really know WHY they thumbed you down... Once I gave a thumbs up ACCIDENTALLY! I was heading for the down, and clicked too soon. (Not on one of your Q's... somebody else...) Some of your downs might have been unintentional... some might be because they don't like your avatar... some might be trolls... some might not like your stance on a topic, regardless of whether you're an atheist or not...
Point being, let it roll off you like water off a duck's back...

There will always be people who thumbs down any opinion that doesn't jive with their own. I've even gotten reported for answering "Yes, on occasion" to a question that someone apparently didn't like. (the reason given was "Netiher an answer nor a question", last I checked, YES was an answer) Lot of people need to grow up on here, just because someone has an opinion you don't like doesn't mean they are wrong.

Because one of the side effects ailing too many who belie in an - omnibenevolent - omnipotent - omniscient being that teaches unconditional love for all people- is to hate those who don't believe in aforementioned being. Pretty ironic huh? Much love to you from your xtian brother Garcia. Let's go get a beer next time your in Miami. I know where all the hot girls are ;-).

Religion is a very important and private issue to most who are devout!
I am also Atheist!
I understand what you are saying!
You need to remember that most people need to hold to a belief that gives their lives meaning!
Your admission that you don't believe in a Supreme Being sitting in judgement of all of our lives....goes against what they believe holds humanity to morality and what is lawful!
Many who are faithful see people who are not as "barbarians" who are in need of conversion!
Here...I even give you a star!

Why is anyone asking you questions about your religion, or lack of? Tell them you don't discuss politics or religion and change the subject. If they persist, tell them it's none of their business.
