I want to upgrade RAM on a HP Pavilion. I've been seeing adds in the newspaper for RAM a lot cheaper than what HP is telling me. Do I have to buy their prouduct? It's a dinosaur of a computer so it's not like I'm in danger of messing up a warranty. I just don't want to put any money into it if I really don't have to.The Data runs at 133MHZ Memory for my model. I also know that my computer can hold up to 512. Is there info on the box it comes in to see if it's compatible with my model #? Or info site?

Generally a lot of the branded pc's try and force you to use their own brand by using particular types of ram that you cant mix - best thing to do is fire up your favourate internet browser and go here:

http://www.kingston.com/

Near the top right is a section labelled Memory Search. Put your model here (HP/Compaq) and click on the button next to the drop down list. This brings up a list of HP/Compaq machines, Select HP/Compaq Pavillion, then click on the search button next to this list. This will bring up a list of all the Pavillions, select your model here (you didnt mention your particular pavillion model number) and click on the search button again. This will bring you a page of what exactly your motherboard will take and any limits the motherboard may have. If the best buy matches the description here, then you can mix and match.

PS If you mix different speeds eg 100/133 the motherboard will run at the lowest speed. Generally you should avoid mixing speeds if you can. Another thing your motherboard may be able to take 133 but the memory you already have may be 100, open the case and look at the memory sticks alreasy there; it should have a label or be printed on the chip as to what speed they actually are.

Hope this helps

Best buy is really the worse buy. Same with HP. Any memory can be used on the computer as long as it's PC133 (sdram).

Shop around first, including your local computer store if a little scared about getting memory on-line. Usually it will be cheaper than best buy.

Go to crucial.com and run a scan with their scanner. Be careful as sometimes the scanner will report the incorrect number of open bays. See what hp.com says about the maximum ramm supported for your machine, as sometimes it won't recognize larger sticks. Ebay is a great place to get used ramm, but be sure to get a non-DOA warranty from the seller and a decent brand like crucial, or Viking, or other big name with a good manufacturer's warranty.

unfortunately the Ram for you computer is very hard to find now. You'd be better off getting a new computer that can accept the new DDR 2 Ram which is the newest type out there. I just ran into that problem when a storm burned out my computer. the memory was fine however it wouldn't fit the new motherboards.

HP is a proprietary system, the memory has a special chip on it, so that only memory from HP, will work in it. Apple does the same thing.

I tried to increase RAM on my older Dell... local computer shop had lots of chips, but couldn't cross-reference and suggested I bring the current chip already in the computer. A sinch to pop it out, and, yes, he had another match, so doubling RAM was easy and pretty cheap too! My computer tells me it recognized the increased RAM immediately on start up. So... maybe do the same???

As long as it's PC133 Memory, you don't have to buy HP's memory. Manufacturers memory is always higher!
