The Louisiana Territory was purchased from the French (who needed the money to fight Britain) for $15 million. Who purchased it? Thomas Jefferson who was president at the time. Many people criticized him for that decision because the national debt was still high! He feared that France would form an empire in that region.Soon after, Jefferson sent Lewis and Clark on an 18 month expidetion to study the new region. :)
