its not true that you cant travel to the usa! if you have any convictions and wish to travel to the usa you must contact the embassy in london and find out if you require a visa! my fiancee got caught for drink driving (it was the morning after the night before!!) and was told he needed a visa! we went to the embassy and he was interviewed and issued with a visa to allow access into the usa

You would have to apply to the US Embassy for an interview where they will assess your case and decide if they are going to give you a visa. If it was 8 years ago and you havent been in trouble since then I cant see it being a problem. If you try to get in without seeing them then they are likely to send you straight back and the possibility of you ever being allowed to enter the US is very small.
Although arranging this interview and paying for the visa is time consuming and I think the visa is about £90 it is worth it in the end. If you are granted a visa a first time then you shouldnt have a problem if you want to visit again.

I think a background investigation is made when you apply for a passport and the visa for visiting the country. If you acquire both the items without any problems then you can certainly visit america. I'm sure you are no more of a threat to this country than the people that are already in somehow.
