Dells are just fine but make sure you buy an extended warrenty. I would take a dell over a mac any day.

At this point, Dell notebooks are of no better or worse general quality than HP or Gateway. Recent stats seem to demonstrate they are all run-of-the-mill, decent business laptops with nothing special to recommend or detract.

Lenovo (ThinkPad) still has a slight edge in quality, and while MacBook and MacBook Pro win in terms of style and perhaps in ease of use (OSX), there is still the issue of relative cost of software and true compatibility for the sake of networking.

Whatever you do, I strongly recommend you purchase a two- or three-year extended warranty with next day, on-site service. ALL notebooks eventually have problems if you own them long enough, and you never want to lose productivity by having to ship the thing back for service.

Hope this helps, best to you.

I have two, and they are good for the first two or three years, then they get bad from there. The screens are very flimsy even on the newer models. They put a lot of extra junk into them. I recommend Lenovo (IBM), or else HP. Dell can be cheap, and sometimes very disappointing. If you still want to buy a Dell, I recommend that you check for the closest Dell store near your area, and give them a visit. Also, the sales people can get tricky. One time the salesman told me to get the cheapest model, because it's all I needed for my work. I know computers very well, and I ended up buying a better one later from Dell.com. Bring a frind who knows computers really well. Good luck!

They are supposed to be very well built machines.
But Dell have let themselves down display wise which is part of the reason why i am not buying it as i have seen one. I dont see the point in spending all your money on a laptop that you are intending to have a long time that looks scruffy and unappealing.

I use a Dell Inspiron 1200 laptop, and they are a real good value for the money.

It isn't their notebooks that I have a problem with. Their tech support once they SELL you the notebook is horrendous. You never get to speak to anyone who can understand English, and, even if they understood what you were asking, THEY DON'T KNOW THE ANSWER!

They're pretty good except the one my mom has has a weird black stripe going down a part of the screen and it has a habit of pausing or not letting you do anything for a short time.

They're ok. They're not the prettiest notebooks, but they've got great deals.
