Not knowing how you hurt your knee - but going from the doctor not being able to do anything for you. The most likely thing that comes to mind is that it is an issue having to do with muscles.
There are four major muscles that are in the thigh any one of them could have places on them that if pressure were applied you would find them to be sore (much more than you would expect). That is where the problem is coming from and referring the pain to the knee.
You may be able to work it out yourself (I could not) or you may need someone else to work the "knots" out to regain mobility.
For more information on muscles (the field no profession claims) there is a (lay vs medical) book out called The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies. Assuming this works it does not hurt to educate your doctor.

If it's at the joint line and your knee is locking, it could be a meniscal tear. Sometimes when you tear a meniscus a piece will break off and lodge itself in the joint, hence the locking.
What did your doctor tell you?
I would recommend seeing an orthopedic surgeon
