Anxiety before any big event is totally normal. You can always try breathing exercises to calm yourself down.

This may sound totally nerdy, but it's what I did when I was in school. Before any test, the manner at which I studied is this:

I acted as though I was actually taking an exam. After studying, I would select a series of random questions in the text (or get a relative to select some). Lock my bedroom door so there was complete silence and gave myself an allotted time to finish the questions without using any study materials whatsoever. When my time was up, I graded myself since most of the answers were in the back of the book.

By putting myself in a test atmosphere at home, I was mentally better prepared for taking the real thing.

As far as other important events, such as meeting new people or public speaking. I always practiced in front of a mirror. Or, if meeting new people or a party, I'd lock myself in my room and turn up some music and dance all spastic and crazy like to get all the bad energy and jitters out of my system. Or, you could take the plunge and enroll in a communications course.

I know I sound crazy, but it helped me. It might help you.

It sounds like you may have some anxiety issues when confronted with tests and such. Breathing fast, sweating, shaking, when confronted with tests are signs of anxiety problems. A lot of people have problems with anxiety.

When you feel anxiety symptoms, usually a major problem is breathing too fast and shallow. Try taking deeper, fuller and slower breaths first. That can help sometimes.

However, it isn't a cure. If these are interfering with your social life or with your academics, you may need to speak with your school psychologist or counselor. In fact, you should do that anyway. They can help.

I think yobigmammas idea is great - a class would help a lot. I use deep breathing and self talk, such as" it's ok malaney you can do this just relax". A lot of people get test anxiety before taking a test. They have books at the library that can help you overcome some of those jitters. Good Luck and never stop trying!

Just recognizing that you react physically to mental stress, is the first step in controlling it so you are half way there already. Everytime you start to get that fearful feeling...take a few deep breathes and concentrate on something peaceful in your life. You need to "take yourself to your happy place."

Nothing's really wrong with you. It sounds like you're just suffering from anxiety attacks. Try some relaxation techniques such as counting slowly or taking deep breaths.

Yes, it's normal... public speaking is the number one fear- even over death! But, just keep telling yourself that you're well prepared, and maybe ask your teacher if you can go first or second just to get it over with. Then you don't have to stress out while everyone else is going.
