Hi, my Red Eared Slider turtle that is about 3.5 years old has just recently had her first taste of six little feeder goldfish. This is the first time she has eaten them but has eaten other moving foods like mealworms, crickets ect. I fed her six one-inch feeder goldfish over a period of 4 or 5 days, today (as of Sunday, Jan 28) I have noticed a transparent layer of 'skin' that is hanging loosley around her neck. This dosen't seem to bother her. Could this be shedding (do turtles shed their skin?) or is this an allergic reaction? Please help!!!

Ps: I WILL go and ask a turtle specialist ASAP!!!

Thank you very much to all who answer!

The condition of the feeders was very good, as far as I could see there were no dead fish, a large uncrowded tank, very clean and filtered water, aquatic plants, and the condidtion of al the other fish in the store were very healthy too.

Turtles do shed, but normally in such small flakes that we barely notice, so it could just be an odd shed. I truly doubt it's an allergic reaction, but as you realize, she should be seen by a specialist just in case it's something not right........

could it be algae? Oh great, now I'm gonna start pondering on what all it could be and I haven't even seen it...

well first off stay away from feeder fish they almost always have parasites and are sick from being in dirty overpopulated tanks, this same situation gets sooo many reptiles sick. I doubt it is an allergic reaction it is probably sick I would bring it to a good herp vet as soon as possible this is the only real way of knowing what is wrong, I do warn you the vet bill will be probably really expensive. Good luck!

My turtle sheds his skin all the time when it gets old. It's a sign that they're growing, and getting rid of their old skin. Don't worry if flakes of her shell fall off too; she's probably adding new growth rings.
