I am putting the Gettysburd address into modern words and cant understand what this part of it means

We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

That the two armies fought here (Gettysburg), and that it is fitting and right that they(the fallen), should be buried on said battlefield.

They are designating that part of land for a grave site. For men who died in battle. It is the right thing to do.

I don't know off hand, but it sounds like he is giving the speech on a battlefield, and honoring the dead who fought there.
