Lord of the Rings because Age of Empires is a very basic game. Age of Empires III - the age of Mythology is better but the original Age of Empires is worse than LOTR.
The Total War series or Warcraft III are amongst the best RTS games and better than either LOTR or AoE.

I have played Lord of the Rings, and Age of Empire. I will have to go with Age of Empires.

Id say lord of the rings, i have both and im constantly on lotr. You can have little 20 minute skirmishes or a day long war of the ring, Age of empires can get boring with no heroes, and you have to instruct each unit individually, which is tedious

I'm a huge fan of both, but I feel that SW is a lot of battles and not as much plot, it's disproportionate; the first thee movies will have like a 20 minute battle and 10 minutes of dialogue and you still don't learn anything to move the story along. I still love SW, but for a similar reason I love LotR, it's a wonderfully well organized fantasy world. As far as the plot holes in LotR, I think it's like the Neil de Grass Tyson the Astrophysicist who noticed that the sky in Titanic was a mirror reflection: if it's something that you're an expert on or if you're just that anal, you'll notice it; if not you'll enjoy the movie. I think my fondness for LotR comes from the ridiculously intricate detail that was put into the creation of the cultures. J.R.R. Tolkien created several races which all have their own languages with grammar and different dialects, songs and poems, detailed histories and mythologies, complex intercultural relationships. It's an example of Literature at its best, and the movies -- with all their flaws-- are quality. There was no obnoxious sex or vulgarity, It's a movie that you can watch with your whole family. The movies might not last -- in your opinion -- but the books are undeniable classics, and the movies -- in my opinion -- are an extension of that.
