My 5 month old has a cold, and the doc told me to use saline drops and keep the mucus out with an aspirator to prevent coughs. He hates it though, and screams when I clean it out. Any tips to make it more pleasant?

Make it more pleasant? NOPE! My son son is 9 months old. He just over a cold. Everytime I had to clean out his nose he would scream bloody murder. I sat on his legs and held his arms down with one arm as I cleaned out his nose with the other. It is NOT easy or "pleasant". But it must be done. Don't worry so much about the crying. Once it's done they'll settle down and be happier since their nose is cleaner.

This fall my daughter had an ear infection and a stuffy nose. My doctor told me to get baby saline and put that in her nose, and then use the bulb syringe to suck it out. She hated it, but after a few days she was back to normal. She was also given antibiotics for the ear infection though.

You can't make it less unpleasant. Most babies hate it. My 5 month old also has a cold and screams when I use the bulb syringe as well. It's simply something that has to be done. Just do it as gently as possible.

babies and aspirators are and will always be the worst of enemies! Best advice? Have it completely deflated to get the most mucus per asperation and be fast on your feet. The quicker you learn to use that tool, the shorter the guaranteed screaming will be. good luck

My daughter hates that so much! Just be sure to hold your son still (I put my leg up on one side and hold her head against my calf), then do it thoroughly but quickly. Then give him a big hug and lots of kisses. It's really best to just do it quickly and get it over with, because I've never seen any trick that makes them like it.

I dont know besides to try to make it fun, my son used to smile and laugh when i used it on him, but not anymore. I don't know what changed? Try talking quietly and moving slowly while doing it and smile alot. Or just do it fast while he screams.
Ha Ha...sometimes he gets so mad that he blows the booger out because of his crying!!

All children hate that, I know I did. Pleasant? I don't know but hold his cheeks gently but firmly in one place and then try to move as quickly, but carefully as you can. It will be easier for you and him, because it is over sooner. It's just hard on him because he can't breath and he's probably frustrated and all.

It's not hurting him, it just seems like all babies hate this. My son freaks out at the sight of the bulb. It really helps them when they are congested, though.

if you are doing it right, the baby will hate it. It actually tickles the inside of the nose causing them to scream, or cry. It shouldn't hurt. Be gentle.

Awe... I'm so sorry. No, all babies hate this, just hold him as close to you as possible while doing it and don't look freaked out by it. The more scared and tense you are the more he will be too.
