Have you done maintenance recently or changed oil or had something checked on it? This can happen if the car computer calibration has been reset by the auto shop and now the car is calibrating it's systems again. If not, you may need to take into service to check if you mixture is correct. The light may also come on if it detects something is off in the fuel to air mixture ratio. Anyhow, if the light went off this means there isn't something major going on and it may just be a small thing that is out of place. Your best bet is to drive it around for another couple days or so and see if it comes on again. If it never comes on again then don't worry about it. If it does, take it in for service to have the car diagnosed. It is true, it may also be due to the gas cap not being properly fastened.
Good luck!

The engine check light comes on when a sensor fails or one that is set to monitor the various parts of the engine activates. If it does not stay on, forget it. If you took it in, the Chevrolet repair would not find anything, and you would have to pay for a check up. If it stays on, go in and have it checked out. Then, the Chevrolet repair will have a chance to catch it by the electronic sensor detector. It will give out a code that the mechanics will translate to the problem. Normally it is minor, but it could be major. Keep an eye on it.

Buy an OBDII scanner from the auto parts store for $70. You'll be able to read the codes from any car built since 97. You can plug it into your friends cars when they get a light and look like a mechanical genius.
A lot of time a certain combination of pressure and temperature reading make the light come on and it never happens again.

THE CHECK ENG. LAMP ON MOST LATE MODEL VEHICLES WILL ILLUMINATE PRIMARILY WHEN THERE IS A CONDITION WITHIN THE POWER TRAIN COMPUTER CONTROL SYSTEM THAT IS MALFUNCTIONING. THE PROBLEM CAN BE A FAILED COMPONENT AND/OR A CONDITION THAT IS BEYOND THE CONTROL SYSTEMS ABILITY TO CONTROL. THERE ARE NUMEROUS DIAGNOSTIC TOOLS ON THE MARKET (SCANNERS) MANUFACTURED , THEY PRIMARILY CONNECT TO SYSTEM VIA A DATA LINK CONNECTOR (MOST LATE MODEL VEHICLES ARE OBDII COMPLIANT) AND ONE CAN READ A ALPHA NUMERIC CODE THAT IS STORED IN THE SYSTEMS MEMORY WHICH WILL LEAD THE TECHNICIAN TO THE AREA OF CONCERN, THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL SYSTEM OF THE MODERN VEHICLE IS A COMPLEX SYSTEM. SIMPLY REPLACING A COMPONENT THAT A DIAG. CODE POINTS TO MAY NOT ALWAYS CORRECT THE PROBLEM. CONDITIONS CAN ARISE THAT CAN CAUSE THE C.E.LAMP TO ILLUMINATE, (SUCH AS VACUUM LEAKS, LOOSE FUEL CAPS, UNPLUGGED SENSORS FROM AIR CLEANER HOUSINGS, AND SO ON). NUMEROUS PARTS STORES CAN PLUG IN AND READ THE TROUBLE CODE WHICH MAY BE OF SOME HELP. ALSO IF YOU'RE FAMILIAR W/ YOUR UNDER-HOOD TAKE A VISUAL , YOU MAY NOTICE SOMETHING UNPLUGGED OR DISCONNECTED (THE CODE WILL BE OF HELP). IT MAY BE NECESSARY TO HAVE IT DIAGNOSED AND REPAIRED BY A TRAINED VEHICLE REPAIR TECHNICIAN. IN ADDITION THE CODE AND LAMP WILL HAVE TO BE CLEARED UPON COMPLETION OF THE REPAIR W/ A SCANNER OTHERWISE THE SYSTEM WILL NOT RESET. HOPE THIS HELPS.. LOU , ASE CERT. MASTER AUTO TECH. ASE CERT. Check the tightness of the gascap. A loose cap will set off the check engine light.

If the light came on, it stored a code. Have it checked if you would like or keep driving and see if it comes on again.

Ron , ron , ron , there will still be a code stored in the vehicles computer for a period of about 50 restarts. If the problem doesn't show up again by that time it will be erased.

Mostly check the gas cap, oil cap.
if it shows up, you can take to autozone and ask them help you have a free diagnotis. With this code, you can find out what happens. http://autorepair.about.com/cs/troubleshooting/l/bl_obd_main.htm
this website shows the meaning of the code.
then you will know what to do.
If you really don't know what to do, you have to take it to the dealership.

It means something is wrong with your engine. It could be something really simple, like a hose, or something major. Best thing to do is take it to a shop and have them hook it up to their computer & diagnos the problem.
