all the the buttons that change your paper to centered, left and righ justified, bold, underline, italic, and all those other buttons on the top are gone. how can i get them back??? thanks

Go to VIEW | TOOLBARS and check FORMATTING.

go to view then toolbars on the top menus
then make sure the "Standard" and "formatting" two are checked. Those should cover all of the buttons that you seem to be missing.
