The incident which finally triggered the beginning of WW1 was the assassination of the Archduke Ferdinand, heir to the throne of the Austrian-Hungarian empire. He was killed by a young man named Gavrilo Princip.

Princip was a member of a radical group which called themselves the Black Hand, who were agitating for Serbian indepence from the Austrian-Hungarian empire.

But bear in mind that prior to that there had been tensions between the powers...Germany vs Britain, France vs Germany, Austia-Hungary vs Serbia. The assassination was just the straw that broke the camel's back (i.e. gave warmongerers an excuse to start shooting).

After that things got a bit silly.

Austria-Hungary invaded Serbia. The Russians declared war on Austria-Hungary because they had agreed to protect Serbia if necessary. Germany then declared war on Russia because they had an alliance with Austria-Hungary. Then France declared war on Germany because the French had an alliance with the Russians.

The British had an alliance with the French and eventually declared war on Germany when the germans invaded Belgium in an attempt to invade France. Britain had promised to protect Belgium if Germany ever invaded that country. (Belgians weren't stupid, they were a tiny country with no military prowess, it was no-brainer that Germany would attack France by going through Belgium).

Four years later, there were a million dead people. The outcomes of that war also set the stage for WW2. Which killed even more people.

Well, some people say that Germany arrived late to the division of the colonies, and wanted more. The assassination of the great duke Franz Fernand in Sarajevo by a Serbian was the sparkle that began the war. Europe was divided in different groups, like Germany, Austria and Italy on one side and Russia, England and France on the other.
Germany wanted more colonies in Africa and Asia

Properly, the Great War wasn't a world war at all. Yes, Japan was a British ally, but all that meant was the easy seizure of a few German islands in the Pacific. At least until the Turkish entry land fighting was confined to Europe, with minor action between British/French and German African colonies.
