I'll give you the very brief version...You'll need to read your text for the details:

Light is absorbed by chlorophyll and other pigments of a photosystem which causes the chlorophyll reaction center molecule to lose an electron. The electron passes through a short electron transport system which actively pumps protons into the thylakoid space. (There's more to the movement of the electron, involving photosystems II and I, and NADP+.)

The protons which have been pumped into the thylakoid space move through ATP Synthase back into the stroma. The spontaneous movement of the protons drives ATP synthesis.
