Our nonprofit mother's organization will be in a local St. Patrick's Day parade. Our mission is to help the children in our area have a happier childhood - whether it be raising money for a new playground or helping a disabled child get a new wheelchair. Every year it gets harder to come up with ideas for the parade. Our float will be built on a donated flatbed. Any suggestions?

I like that idea above, I'd build on it a little bit.
Green paint, blank paper, and kids' hand and foot prints. Theme could be something like "lend a helping hand" to these children. You could have one big hand painted in the center of the float with a shamrock in the center of it.

Or you could incorporate the history of St. Pat's day or the man himself into your float. Just do a search for origin or history of Saint Patrick's Day, you'll get a lot of sites, there is one listed below.

Have fun and good luck!

Hey, if there's an irish dance troupe in your area that aren't already in the parade you can have them on your float. you can create a small parquet floor for periods when the float is at a pause they can do a quick reel or jig. Their costumes alone will draw attention - they're so vibrant. Or you can have couples learn a simple Irish set dance routine and they can do that during any pauses. While the float is in motion have traditional irish music on speakers, and a few people pretending to be playing the fiddle, boidran (the drum-like instrument), the penny whistle...you can even make cardboard instruments that people can pretend to use.

get signs that say: I'll be your mommy and/or All my children. Put like the others said...footprints and handprints all over it. Have the women giving gold coins to the children. Have the children in gold or yellow to let them shine more. Have the mom's giving them the coins. Maybe a wheelchair with gold coins coming off of it or a pile of it on the chair. Children at a maypole with streamers coming off of it and them skipping around in a circle if possible. Make a rainbow and have the children at one end of the rainbow and a pot of gold at the other and have your organizations name across the middle of the rainbow. Make arrows pointing from the kids to the gold and vise versa. Have the people on the float wear shamrocks that have smiley faces on them.

go to a local paper company if any and ask for ends to the rolls you can get big rolls of paper free and let the kids go to town on it with green paints have people donate newspapers and make paper mache clovers to add to the float as well
