If your HDTV already has an ATSC tuner built in, you don't need a cable box to watch HDTV. Just plug in an antenna and start tuning for digital channels.

Granted, you're limited to what your local broadcasters put out there, but, unless you really need to watch The Sopranos in HD, you should be OK.

Most local channels broadcast in HD now. Your TV needs to have a built-in tuner & you need an HD antenna. To get more channels then yes you need an HD cable box.
