i know its rated r but what does that mean?

I doubt it is rated R in the UK. In the UK and R rating is for hardcore pornography available in sex shops. I think it is a 12 rating, possibly a 15.

Rated R means restricted. Recomended for over 18.
G- General = Everyone
PG = Family, but young children should be supervised
12= Persons over 12.
PG13= Persons under 13 should be supervised
15= Persons over 15
18 = For persons of 18 years and over (recomended)
R = Strictly over 18 years old.

G - General exhibition
PG - Parental guidance reccommended for persons under 15
years of age
M - Reccommended for mature audiences 15 years and over
MA - Restrictions apply top persons under 15 years
R - Restricted to persons under 18 years of age
It means you have to be 18 years old to watch the movie.
