Sex
Without sex living things just reproduce and the only variation comes about by mutation.
With sex a living thing is assured of 2 different combinations of genes. Even if we tried to standardize a species, there would still be recessive genes and mutation.
Without variation a species is more likely to become extinct. One disease could kill them all instead of some surviving to reproduce.

Is it being maintained? Seems that society is bent on mono-systems in looks, consumer goods and industrialized food stuffs! Differences are suspect and most are trying to comply by fitting in the the 'norm' set by the powers-that-be. Survival of the fittest is just another sound bite for saying who cares!
