I am writing a novel. Is is okay to write scenes from somewhere in the middle or end of the novel first, rather than start at the beginning, because I feel this will help me to get a better idea of how to start out and get to know my characters more.. So, is that okay, do you think?

I thought I was the only person who did that! I'm glad that somebody else does. I like writing long stories and I usually start in the middle at some big dramtic scene. Then I work backwards to develop my characters and show how that got to that point. I think it helps doing it that way. It eventually flows together and everything makes sense.

It's ok to write scenes from the middle or end as long as you understand that it will need to be rewritten and rewritten befor the novel is finished. I myself wirte chapters as the ideas come to me and then determine where in the book that chapter will be. However you have to make sure the novel flows well and has continuity. Chapter 8 may eventually become chapter 5 or 10. I don't like to write from a flow chart or diagram because it tends to stifle my creativity.

I do the same thing. I have much of the beginning written, but sometimes I jump ahead and write stuff down for later, when I think I've come up with a good idea. You can always edit it later if parts need to be changed to stick with the flow of the story.

Whatever is easiest for you to write, really. As long as the finished product makes sense to the rest of us. ;)

Of course it is okay. You are the author and you have to use the methods that work for your craft. Why wouldn't it be okay? There are no Fiction Police that are going to arrest you for not beginning at the beginning. I am fairly sure that many writers do it the way you described.

Yeah, it's okay. It helps if you have a good idea of where your story is going. I have most of the endings written for my planned novels and it's kept me from straying sometimes.

Absolutely. Not an uncommon practice at all! As long as they all meld and make sense to the reader by the end!

Ever read "Bless the Beasts and Children"? Easy short read... might help you sort out how you want to handle yours!

Oh, good luck with it, btw!!

My daughter does that all the time. Write the parts you can 'see' and add to it later.
