One of the main reasons so many young black men end up in prison is environment. Many of these young men live in large cities where gang membership is the only way of surviving. Gangs can bring violence, drugs and crime into anyone's life. As a result, prisons contain many young black men.

Another reason is lack of education. Without education it's almost impossible to make an honest, decent living. Theft and drug dealing are often means to an end for them. Again, prisons house many such people.

Young men of any color as face these obstacles and are also doing time.

America has set up a system which keeps poor minorities living in impovrished areas from moving up and out by not investing in the areas after other sector (manufacturing, etc...) move out. With horrible public education and very little employment opportunities many young men (and the are NOT all black) in these neighbourhoods are left with very little to look forward to in life thus turning to gangs and violence. I believe the the vast majority of (rich, white) Americans could care less about this situation though as they are and have been the architects of this social situation. Xenophobics (mainly Republicans) who work in the upper eschalons of the U.S. government do not want minorities to succeed outside of the sports and entertainment industry as it threatens their "homogeneous" rein in upper society. Black men are often told that they must be good at a sport or be a good musician to become anything worthy. Obviously not every black person is an athelete or musician and this, in combination with very little opportunities elsewhere, is also a reason for this occurance. Until the American government begins to provide opportunities to people in impovrished areas these trends will continue. So in short, no jobs, no social programs, an underfunded public education system along with unfair district rules which keep poor students in lackluster grade and secondary schools and just outright apathy from the local and federal goverment are why I believe so many young minorities end up in prison.

P.S. On a whole other note...

Why have most of your hate crimes throught human history been committed by white people?

Why are so many white Catholic priests also child molesters?

Why are most of your serial killers middle aged white men?

Just wondering.....

Two reasons: Poverty and street gangs. However, there are a lot of fine young black men who don't end up in prison, and in fact, turn out to be doctors, lawyers, professional sports figures and entertainers, not to mention, politicians. If a person wants to make something of his or herself, despite a less than perfect upbringing, he or she can do it, regardless of skin color. There are a lot of white young men who end up in prison as well as blacks. It all depends on the individual. There are choices that can be made. Will it be a good choice or a bad one? That's the real question.

Poverty. Crime and poverty go hand in hand. Yes, there is a disproportionate amount of young black men in prison, but I bet 90% come from poverty. A simple truth really, if you come from sh!t then your chances of growing up to be sh!t are pretty high. I guess I could have articulated that differently, but why? Mediocrity has a funny way of holding you in one place. I doubt popular culture helps matters much when you consider rich rappers "singing" about life in da hood. Yes, wear your pants sagging and steal whats coming to ya. These things are obviously counterproductive. Why would you get an education and work when Momma doesn't do these things and she gets a check? Think about it. Not all blacks are uneducated leeches of society, but ANYONE who falls into the category was probably born into it. I do believe ghetto is a term that refers to the Jewish neighborhoods of the early-mid 1900s. Many young blacks find appeal in a brigand's lifestyle.

Lack of available decent jobs, growing up without a father and a mother on welfare, in prison for minor drug crimes that most whites who commit the same offenses do not go to prison, poor living conditions growing up, etc. The blacks I know who had both parents or a parent with a good job went to college and have good lives.

Sorry I don't believe its only in the black young men, there are whites and other races that end up in prison for doing crimes that they shouldn't be doing.

It is not because they are black it is the culture they grow up in. With so many fatherless children and parents not teaching their children what is right (this happens in all races it is more prominent among the poor) people depend on the government instead of taking charge of their situation. People try to short cut how to live and those short cuts are usually crimes.

loss of coaching. that is been occurring for generations. as quickly as slaves have been unfastened they have been given no longer something! They lacked the mandatory skills to upward push up. As slaves they don't have an coaching. After slavery they don't have a ideal coaching what with the segregation and all. unfavorable academic centers discouraged gaining knowledge of. mum and dad believed their babies may well be extra appropriate off assisting around the domicile/farm despite. A style accompanied. The staying power of racism and scarcity of help from the government has saved many Blacks from convalescing their high quality of existence. Now a days that's no longer racisms fault inspite of the shown fact that it became the reason. The glorifying of "thug existence" and the belief of a "gangsta" has perpetuated incorrect values i.e. objectifying women individuals, valuing cloth products, dozing with many women individuals and having them look after the toddler by utilising themselves. the shortcoming of a ideal residing atmosphere discourages a first rate residing. inspite of the shown fact that lots of people have risen and have made first rate livings others do exactly no longer see any way out of poverty. they do no longer understand from now on appropriate with the aid of fact they weren't taught from now on appropriate and so the subsequent era grows up like that. There are 2 issues which could be executed to stop this. before everything, values could substitute. people could stop valuing intercourse, "bling" and medicines. they could inspire coaching and proper parenting. 2d, the government needs to construct ideal academic centers to inspire gaining knowledge of. as quickly as babies are given a place the place they are able to learn and revel in gaining knowledge of, they're going to learn and flow directly to extra appropriate lives as adults, no longer basically sturdy textual content books yet sturdy instructors aswell. additionally the government needs to make beginning administration extra rather obtainable in such places the place poverty occurs. while an undesirable toddler is born, opportunities are high they're going to improve as much as be a reformatory inmate like their fathers(in specific circumstances mothers) Many transformations could be executed on the two factors if we are ever going to confirm substantial transformations

About 10.4% of the entire African-American male population in the United States aged 25 to 29 was incarcerated, by far the largest racial or ethnic group—by comparison, 2.4% of Hispanic men and 1.2% of white men in that same age group were incarcerated. According to a report by the Justice Policy Institute in 2002, the number of black men in prison has grown to five times the rate it was twenty years ago. Today, more African-American men are in jail than in college. In 2000 there were 791,600 black men in prison and 603,032 enrolled in college. In 1980, there were 143,000 black men in prison and 463,700 enrolled in college.
Discrimination in hiring is still a fact of life for black men in our society. An article last year in The Wall Street Journal reported on a study that showed white men with a criminal record have a better chance of being asked back after a first job interview than black men without a record.
Black men ages 18 to 65 are seven times more likely than white men to have a prison record. There are now more African American men in prison than in college. Nationally, approximately 13 percent of African American men - 1.4 million - are ineligible to vote because of criminal records. One of the so-called "collateral consequences" of this fact are the barriers to employment for black men with a felony conviction.

Besides providing an excuse not to hire African American men, a felony conviction bars them from employment in several sectors of the economy because an increasing number of jobs in the workforce are now off-limits to anyone with a prison record. In New York State, these include such innocuous occupations as licensed barber or plumber. The prohibitions are applied without judicial discretion and usually have no relation to specific crimes. But they severely affect offenders' chances of ever getting a decent job, contributing to the instability of their families and their communities.
