there are pros and cons

pros:
microsoft moves really fast... exciting.. new stuff... smart programmers
microsoft has a reputation for very high quality programmers.. also... in the past the original employees did very well stock wise...
not sure it is really 'the best' for everyone... but it might be 'the best' for you

cons:
they are a little more prone to 'rip and replace' strategies and not as 'strategic' as some other more carefully architected solutions... their products have allot of succeptability to virus and attacks of those sort
they used to have a reputation for putting stuff out quick that was pretty buggy

some of the products they enjoyed success with might be losing ground in the future.
they seem to have allot of success in what they do, lotus domino might be an inherently better product than microsoft office and J2EE might be inherently better than .NET... better architected at least.. but in the end the customer decides
C# is clever...

all in all....
you could certainly do worse than go there and it looks good on the resume no doubt

"Luke, I am your father, join the Dark Side ..."

Well, it's not that bad, and I hear it's gotten better. I just distrust any institution with that much power. I'd rather work for a company that changes things for the better, even with less than top pay, benefits, etc.
