It was written and first recorded by J.J. Cale. It was first popularized by Eric Clapton with a version in the 70's.

JJ Cale recorded it in 1976. Clapton recorded it in 1977.

It's J.J.Cale, but Clapton's version became really popular so many amateurs think it was him.
