I think three months is a little long to not get a pay raise, but it seems to me that if one has been asked to do this they certainly must be in a position to assume that job permanently.

If the company needs someone to fill the position, they'll pay a premium. If "your friend" really wants to try his/her supervisor's job temporarily, he/she should negotiate a slight increase to offset the increase in responsibility.

I wouldn't do it without a pay raise even if it's only a temporary one and you would go back to your regular wage after he came back.
