No they serve big meals because we demand it. Getting a bigger portion makes us feel like we are getting our money's worth from our meal, when in fact what we are really getting from our big meal is FAT.

True, low class restaurants do because they don't have anything good to offer. They try to fill you up as much as possible with cheap food thus you feel like you got what you are paying for. In a high class restaurant we want you to order as many things as possible therefore running up the bill... you pay for the service and delicious food.
By giving massive portions the chef doesn't know how to cook.

True in some cases like steak houses that fill you up on cheap fillers such as chili or baked beans, rice pilaf, grilled bread and some kind of potatoes. All cheap-to-buy items.
Then if the quality of the small steak you are served is good, that's what you'll remember, right?

Yes I think thats true. The portions we are served could feed a few people. If they served less they probaly would have to lower prices. I would rather have a smaller portion and pay the same than have to waste food.

False. If anything, the more expensive, the less food. Steaks are smaller. You get more frills, ie: parsley, drizzle on the plate, plate the size of a charger, cloth instead of paper, patient, well-clothed server and more of them = more $$$

Sounds like a plan to me,however, many of us do take home what we can't eat there. a friend who runs a local resturant told me the cost of a meal I questioned the high price on and she has no reason to lie about it and their expenses aren't that cheap.
Prices have to reflect overhead, everything from employees, electricity, fuel to cook, heat or air conditioning seasnally, cancelled reservations of special food was ordered for,e tc. You could not pay me to run one!

I would agree. So I always ask for a to-go plate even though I rarely eat it when I get home, but THEY don't have to know that!

true, very true. That's why you should always ask to for a "doggie" bag.
