Check out Torrey Pines State Reserve - overview below. Also, the Solana Beach Cedros Design District is cool. Some people like the track so they go to the horse races in Del Mar.

In La Jolla, the Museum of Contemporary Art is cool! There's also a place in downtown La Jolla called the Morrison Hotel gallery which features rock and roll photographers like Henry Diltz (Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Grateful Dead), Bob Gruen (Clash, Sex Pistols, New York Dolls) and others.

My fav thing to do in the La Jolla area is to go up to the Gliderport at Torrey Pines. The parking is free and you can just wander up to the cliffs where hangliders float and jump off the mountainside. You get an unbelievable view of the Pacific, as well as a bird's eye view of the gliders as they take off and land from the cliffs! After you've had your fill of the cliffside views, you can head down to Mt. Soledad to visit the infamous cross and enjoy a 360 degree view of San Diego--a definite must-see for visitors (it'll knock the wind out of you, it's so beautiful!)

Have a bonfire on the beach, kayak through the caves at La Jolla, drive up to Mt. Soledad in La Jolla for a panoramic view of the city, bike along the coast, hike at Torrey Pines, watch the sunset.....lots of things to do!

The Birch Aquarium is in La Jolla. Window shop in downtown L.J.
Watch hang gliders in Torrey Pines. In Del Mar, they usually have things going on at the fairgrounds ie. dog show, home show, plant show and there too, you can peruse the shops in downtown.

I don't think that there are any aside from the beach and it's too cold right now for that. Both are pretty and all, but, dull, dull, dull, I wouldn't stay there llong, better off in central San Diego.
